Accra: The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services, Ms. Kgomotso Ramolobeng, has extended her best wishes to the National Library and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) for the success of the Funda Mzantsi Competition scheduled for 2025.
According to African Press Organization, this initiative aligns with the committee’s commitment to prioritize oversight visits in the Eastern Cape province, commencing on Monday, the 6th. Ms. Ramolobeng emphasized that the competition, which is held in collaboration with the National Library, has significantly impacted the lives of incarcerated individuals. The timing of the competition coincides with the committee’s surprise oversight visits in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape provinces.
The committee’s agenda includes evaluating several key aspects: the skills programs available to offenders, the conditions of detention for both remand and sentenced inmates, the treatment of offenders who are mothers, and the overall infrastructure of correctional centers. These assessments will involve physical walkabouts of the correctional facilities.
Ms. Ramolobeng stated that the objective of these visits is not to scrutinize officials but to ensure that dignity is upheld for the most disadvantaged members of society.
