East london: The Minister of Higher Education and Training Buti Manamela has implored all students and stakeholders to refrain from violence, intimidation and damage to property, following the escalating unrest at the University of Fort Hare, on Wednesday evening.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Minister stated that he has been in contact with the MEC for Community Safety to ensure law enforcement acts proportionately and that criminal elements do not exploit the situation. The Minister emphasized the importance of protecting the University’s legacy through dialogue and collective responsibility.
Minister Manamela expressed his concern over the escalating unrest at the University of Fort Hare. He engaged with student representatives, urging them to de-escalate the situation and ensure peaceful protest actions while providing leadership to protect both lives and university property.
The Minister communicated with the University Council through its Chair, requesting a detailed de-escalation plan and measures to safeguard lives and campus infrastructure. A team led by Professor Ahmed Bawa is actively engaging with management, student leaders, unions, and Institutional Forums to stabilize the situation and facilitate dialogue.
Minister Manamela condemned the destruction of property and acts of violence, stressing the importance of preserving learning opportunities and resources for future generations. He also praised the initiative of the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, who has deployed community and church leaders to help reduce tensions.
