Pretoria: The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has today expressed its approval of the appointment of new commissioners, marking a significant step in ensuring the Commission’s effective operation.
According to South African Government News Agency, the new commissioners have been appointed on a seven-year contract. During a media briefing held in Pretoria, Deputy Chief Electoral Commissioner Masego Shiburi conveyed the Commission’s gratitude towards the Chief Justice and the panel members for their diligent efforts in expediting the process. Shiburi also extended thanks to the Speaker of Parliament, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs, and all Committee members for their support and commitment to concluding this crucial process in a timely manner.
On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the appointment of Ms Joyce Pitso, Judge Dhaya Pillay, and Mr Mosotho Moepya as Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. Shiburi emphasized the significance of this development, ensuring that the Commission continues to function with the required quorum to make key decisions, such as adjudicating objections, appointing staff, and overseeing the delivery of the general elections of municipal councils.
President Ramaphosa, acting under Section 6 of the Electoral Commission Act and following the recommendation of the National Assembly, appointed the following commissioners: Mrs. Joyce Pitso as a full-time member, Judge Dhaya Pillay as a part-time member, and Mr. Mosotho Moepya as a full-time member. Furthermore, under Section 8(1) of the Electoral Commission Act, Mr. Moepya has been designated as the Chairperson of the Commission.
