Soweto: The Gauteng Health Department is set to join the global community in commemorating World Diabetes Day on Friday, with a focus on mobilizing communities towards healthier lifestyle choices. Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, will spearhead the event at the Protea South Community Hall in Soweto.
According to South African Government News Agency, World Diabetes Day is an annual campaign aimed at raising awareness about diabetes and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). This year’s campaign emphasizes the challenges faced by individuals with diabetes in the workplace and promotes early screening to mitigate severe health complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems. The department’s slogan for the event is “Know more and do more for diabetes at work,” urging employers to address workplace challenges like stigma and discrimination.
Regular screening plays a crucial role in early detection, particularly for individuals aged 35 to 75 who are overweight or obese, as they are at higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Monitoring blood glucose levels is also essential for managing diabetes effectively, as poorly controlled diabetes can lead to serious health complications.
The department has been actively monitoring diabetes control performance across facilities, maintaining a control rate of approximately 65% over the past year, indicating reasonable glycaemic control in six out of ten monitored patients. The commemoration aligns with the global theme “Diabetes and Well-being,” underscoring the need for a holistic approach to managing diabetes that includes physical, mental, and social aspects.
In anticipation of the event, the MEC will illuminate the blue lights at Pholosong Regional Hospital on Thursday. This gesture symbolizes a commitment to raising awareness about diabetes and underscores the importance of prevention, management, and support for those affected. The provincial government marks World Diabetes Day in collaboration with Novo Nordisk and the City of Johannesburg.
