Statistics South Africa has cancelled the release of the Violence Against Women report that was scheduled for 14th March 2019. During the final quality check, some technicalities with the dataset were discovered and from a statistical perspective it is important to act responsibly when publishing statistics so that they do not misinform decision making. This led to greater consideration being given to the fact that the South African Demographic and Health Survey (SADHS) 2016, which was used to compile the report, only provides minimal information on this topic.
Violence against Women is a sensitive and complex subject and requires a specialised survey to measure. Stats SA's commitment and support to efforts of obtaining resources to conduct a specialised survey on this important topic continues.
