Rapists given hefty jail sentences

As the 16 Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children are already in full swing, the South African Police Service in the Province continues to send criminals involved in the most heinous crimes including rapes and sexual assaults to long jail terms.

Frans Makhafola aged 33

Alfred Lesiba Magongoa aged 27 and

Ephraim Malotsa aged 27, were each sentenced to life imprisonment for rape by the Mokerong Regional Court this week.

The heavy sentences emanate from an incident which occurred on the 17th October 2016 at Ga-Magongoa Zone 02, outside Mokopane.

The trio grabbed a 35-year-old woman who was on her way home from a funeral, dragged her to the nearby bushes where they took turns in raping her.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bafana Linda has applauded a Team of Detectives from Mahwelereng Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for cracking this case. "As we are in the midst of a very important period in which all sectors of our communities are engaged in activities that are aimed at eradicating abuses of women and children, this sentence will send a clear message that crimes perpetrated against the most vulnerable will not be tolerated," said Lieutenant General Linda.

He concluded by reiterating his commendation to the members involved for their meticulous detective work and dedication in making sure that, through their determination, a befitting and appropriate sentence is meted against the accused.
