Pietermaritzburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced four accused for crimes they committed in 2014. On the night of 17 September 2014, four men armed with firearms and knives accosted a couple that was at a residential place in Beaumont area, Mid Illovo. They tied them up and robbed them of their valuables. Two of them also raped the female (25) and fled. Charges of rape and house robbery were opened at Mid Illovo police station and the docket was transferred to the Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.
Accused were immediately arrested after a swift reaction by the investigators. They were kept in custody until their successful prosecution. The accused were positively identified during an identification parade and two rape accused were positively linked by DNA. Sandile Cyprian Mbatha, 25, was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and two years for possession of unlicensed firearm since he was found with a firearm in his possession during the arrest. Themba Kenneth Nkomo, 39, was sentenced to 25 years for rape and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. Vusumuzi Yothwana, 28, and Nkululeko Khumalo, 29, were each sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Accused received well-befitting sentences for their horrendous actions and traumatic situation, the victims experienced during an ordeal.
