The Deputy Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Makhotso Maggie Sotyu has warned social media users not to fall for any requests for assistance, financial and otherwise, solicited through several fake Facebook accounts using her name.
The Deputy Minister has called on the social media users not to be misled by the impersonator(s) on the social media websites.
Deputy Minister Sotyu has confirmed that she uses only one Facebook account, under Makhotso Sotyu and has never personally or by delegation requested any form of assistance to anyone. I have a Facebook account, and use it to publish some of the work I do as a public representative. All requests solicited through Facebook and possibly other social media platforms in my name are nothing but fake and misleading, said Deputy Minister Sotyu.
I urge all South Africans and our stakeholders to be vigilant against fraudulent scams. All stakeholders who want to engage on social media should do so through the Department of Environmental Affairs' official platforms, which include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, added Deputy Minister.
The Ministry has since approached Facebook South Africa to deactivate the fake accounts with immediate effect, while the matter is being investigated.
